Google Cultural Institute

Google to help Indian Railways digitize Heritage assets

Google Heritage RailIndian Railways is collaborating with the Google Cultural Institute to exhibit its heritage assets like bridges, steam locomotives, buildings, artifacts and museums over the latter’s platform. The agreement will help the Railways digitize its assets which can then be accessed online for free.
The Railways also plans to launch a dedicated rail heritage website as well, although it does not provide a timeline for it. Other than this, the Railways claims it is in the process of preparing a comprehensive conservation management program to preserve and promote its heritage assets. The agency will also eventually offer online and virtual tours as ‘tourist attractions’.
The GCI project from Google helps digitize historical exhibits, collections, galleries from museums all over the world and display it online in a viewable format. It was launched globally in 2011 and in India in 2012, by initially partnering with the National Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi. Currently, GCI works with more than 18 Indian institutions.
New features and locations: In July this year, GCI updated its website and app to allow users to browse the history and view panoramic imagery of historical sites like the Nalanda University. Additionally the company added new features like scrolling through art using a timeline and browsing painting based on color. It also started allowing features like using VR headsets for virtual tours.
GCI partnership with Indian Museum: In May this year, the GCI added 360-degree panoramic format images of artifacts, historical paintings and sculptures from within the galleries of Indian Museum. The company said then that all of the 35 physical galleries across categories like Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, etc. from the Indian Museum in Kolkata will be digitized under the GCI project.
GCI partnership with National Museum: In August last year, the GCI added over 2,000 new images and 70 virtual exhibits from India, in partnership with the National Museum. At that time, GCI said that it will be digitizing material from 10 other partner institutions, namely the Salar Jung Museum, Victoria Memorial Hall Kolkata, Dastkari Haat Samiti, Devi Art Foundation, among others.

Other developments:
– In March this year, Google added panoramic views of 31 monuments and Indian archaeological sites on Google Maps and the Google Cultural Institute. The ASI hadlaunched a national portal for museums. Collections in all museums under its control and those under the ASI would be digitized and presented on this portal.
– In August last year, Google India extended its partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) by adding 360-degree panoramic images of 76 new heritage sites to Google Maps. Additionally, 30 exhibitions of arts and historical institutions and over 1400 cultural objects from India could be viewed via the Google Cultural Institute.

NEW RAIL LINES

Hyperloop

Hyperloop can build System with a sixth of Highspeed Rail budget use a fraction of energy

Hyperloop concept was first released in 2013 by Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk as an alternative to high-speed rail. Musk said he wanted to make Hyperloop an open-source project for high-speed transportation. Several separate entities have since been formed to explore the possibilities.
Musk’s white paper had the basic concept of how a pod could propel over 100,000 people at the speed of sound, from one city to another in vacuum tubes. It felt like an idea from the world of HG Wells. Within a year, two companies said they had raised money. One is Hyperloop Transportation Technology (HTT) and the other Hyperloop One – a Boeing or Airbus of the Hyperloop world.
They have slugged it out in the press for months, claiming to have an upper hand in technology. Bibop Grestabottomleft, COO, HTT, spoke toPatanjali Pahwa on Sunday at the i5 summit organised by the Indian Institute of Management, Indore. Excerpts:
Population density and the lack of infrastructure are two primary reasons to look at India as a market.
Hyperloop can build the system with a sixth of the budget of high-speed rail, using a fraction of energy.
Lufthansa and BMW sponsor most of our events. We are not a threat to them. We are better than them
2016 is a breakthrough year for Hyperloop
2016 is a breakthrough year for Hyperloop
Your visit comes at a time when India is betting big on high-speed trains? Do you see a market here for HTT?
We are here primarily to speak to your politicians and see if there is a real interest in solving the transportation problems of this country. The population density and the lack of infrastructure are two primary reasons to look at India as a market.
India is talking about implementing new ways of transportation. You have been talking, for years, about high-speed rail. I believe, this could be the worst thing to do. It is obsolete technology and it will be a burden on the next generation.
India doesn’t need to repeat the mistakes of other countries. And high-speed rail is a mistake. These high-speed rail systems mean you spend too much money and can’t recoup the investment.
What do you mean by mistakes? Please explain.
I was talking to the Chinese rail authority officials before I came to India. They said they had to speed up the line three times because the system had reached its maximum capacity on certain routes.
Above 600 kmph, there is so much resistance in the air that it becomes liquid. The amount of energy you need to increase the speed depends solely on how much energy is pushed in. That is expensive and doesn’t work in the long term.
How does Hyperloop change that?
When you talk about Hyperloop, there is no air. So there’s no resistance. Theoretically, you can go at the speed of light. We can build the system with a sixth of the budget of high-speed rail, using a fraction of energy.
The way we produce energy is interesting: solar panels, wind, regenerative energy and in cases where solar is not possible, we will use geo thermal. This means, we will produce 30 per cent more energy than we consume. Hyperloop effectively becomes a giant power station that also happens to transport people.
But is India a viable market? In Mumbai and Bengaluru, it took a better part of a decade to get simple Metro lines ready.
The best place to build a Hyperloop is underground but right now because we don’t have the technology, we will build it on pylons.
Building on pylons means we can take advantage of the right of way that already exists. We can use existing infrastructure to give us an entry and exit into the city. It has miles and miles of right way. If needed, we can start building it now. We have already analysed two potential corridors in the country.
What about the displacement of the local population? That is one of the big reasons why projects get delayed here.
Right now, when we build a railway of highway, we make a barrier. Farmers cannot pass to the other side, neither can animals. It is disastrous. Building on pylons takes it all out. The way we build it, the pylons can resist an earthquake with magnitude of 9 on the Richter scale.
We put a pylon every 60 meters and don’t block the road. The pylons are made in a way that the electricity produced by the Hyperloop can be given out, it can collect water, we can bring electricity and bandwidth.
We increase the value of the land. India can be a good country to build that. Instead of using a technology which needs high maintenance cost, we can build something cheap and clean. There is no expense to run it because there is no friction or mechanical parts.
You have been accused by various media outlets of being too secretive about your designs. You haven’t even released the results of the tests.
What you see right now on the internet is not what will emerge. Why won’t we give out our designs? We have another player in the market and we don’t want to give them anything they can copy. They came in one year after us and that’s what they do. You will see us releasing some designs at a time where it can’t be used against us.
But what about testing and prototypes?
We are building the prototype right now. We hope to get a few permissions in February for our project in LA. In 2019, we should have our first ride. This we could foresee. What we could not were our parallel projects. We signed two big deals: one in Slovakia and the other we haven’t announced yet.
Internet is full of speculation that the second deal is in Dubai?
I won’t give you the name. But it could be a country which could see the first Hyperloop system in the world.
Even before Los Angeles?
Possibly.
Do you see any Indian partnerships on the horizon?
We have hired 14 people in India who are discreetly working for us. We will announce details of these partnerships soon. We believe India could be the focal point for engineering and computer programming. We are doing a call to action for all companies that want to join us. We have 600 people working for us in 52 countries. But they will come on as consultants, not acquisitions. Acquisitions are also on the table.
What is your long-term plan?
We want to create a sustainable company. We don’t want to use exhaustible resources as unlimited ones. If you had to build a high-speed rail system between two cities in the US, you will need to keep the mines occupied for 24 years, at 99 per cent of capacity. And imagine transporting steel to the site because it can only be welded on site. This is not sustainable or smart.
We don’t want to be builders. We seek to make local partnerships to help us build our system. Maybe in phase two or three we might go there. But right now we just want to be a platform. We want to be Disney.
Concord started with a similar ambition of reducing time of travel but it retired in 2003. How do you stop HTT from becoming another Concord?
Concord did two things wrong. One, it was expensive and polluting. Two, it was a blackhole for other service providers. Airlines make money of business class and first class passengers. They pay a premium so the rest of them can pay less and travel.
If you take away the first class passengers, the airline industry collapses. We don’t do that. We are complimentary to others. Not a replacement. In fact, Lufthansa and BMW sponsor most of our events. We are not a threat to them. We are better than them.

Time-tabled Freight Train ‘Auto Express’ flagged off from Gurgaon

Time-tabled Freight Train ‘Auto Express’ flagged off from Gurgaon

Time-tabled Freight Train for Auto Sectors

Time-tabled Freight TrainsGurgaon: After launching a time-tabled container freight train, the Ministry of Railways launched a time-tabled freight train for the auto sector on Delhi-Bengaluru route.
Targeting 25 per cent rail share in automobile traffic, railways launched time-tabled Auto Express from Gurgaon to Nidvanda to ensure faster delivery of cargo on 12th July, 2016.
The domestic auto sector is one of the largest in the world with annual production of about 24 million vehicles. During year 2015-16, IR has loaded 708 rakes carrying 2,35,907 units of four-wheeler / three-wheeler / two-wheeler.
IR’s present rail share in the automobile transportation is only about 3 per cent. Railways has also opened up good-sheds for container train operators, subject to certain conditions.
“Like our ever-growing population, auto population is also increasing on a faster rate. In fact auto sector is a fastest growing economy. If railways can tap it then it will be major source of revenue,” Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said after launching the first time-tabled auto car freight train service between Gurgaon and Nidvanda (Bangalore) from here through video-conferencing.
He said that with today’s flag off that too with time-table run of auto-car freight train would ensure timely delivery of the automobiles which would increase confidence of auto industry on railway’s credibility.
At present about 2000 cars move per month between Gurgaon and Nidavanda. With launch of the time tabled run of the freight train for automobile traffic, the volume will go up and the number of trips are likely to increase resulting transportation of about 6000 cars a month.
Railway Board Member (Traffic) Mohd Jamshed said railways has earlier launched time-tabled Cargo Express and now Auto Express to ensure faster movement of traffic.
“These special trains have wagons to run 100 km per hour. So the travel duration has decreased from 70 hours to 57 hours.”
Jamshed further said auto cargo is time sensitive and hence time-tabled running is important to ensure quality service.

Railways opens up Parcel Services to Private Sector – Container Train Operators to run Parcel Special Trains

Railways has introduced the facility of Train Service Parcel Van in the Country!
Railways has introduced the facility of Train Service Parcel Van in the Country!
New Delhi: The Railways today opened its parcel business segment to container train operators to run “parcel special trains” in a bid to shore up its earnings.
“Parcel business is increasing as it is a fast moving sector. We want to increase our parcel share which is currently not much,” Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said after announcing the liberalised parcel policy here.
The Railways earn about Rs 2,000 crore a year in parcel business. It has set a target of Rs 3,000 crore for the current fiscal.
The commercial wing formulate strategies so as to encourage the agriculture / poultry trade to utilize railways for transport of perishable commodities including poultry products such as eggs, apart from Electronic Goods and Pharmaceuticals will be beneficial from the facility.
As per the new policy, container train operators (CTO) will be allowed to operate parcel special trains consisting of parcel vans. A parcel special train will have 20 parcel vans.
Prabhu said the initiative was mentioned in the rail budget. The facility is sure to give a big fillip to the transport of perishable commodities including Eggs from the region towards consumer destinations. The VPU service will hold a capacity for transport of 23 Tonnes of commodity, he said.
CTOs will aggregate the parcel cargo from customers and offer the same in full rake load. At the respective destinations, parcel cargo will be delivered to CTOs for further segregation and handing over to customers.
Prabhu said the Post and Telegraph department also has ambitious plans to increase their parcel business and the Railways can tie up with them.
Railway Board Member (Traffic) Mohd Jamshed said parcel operation was being currently carried in a very limited way and efforts are on to increase it in a significant way.
Parcel policy has been liberalised now and all zones have been asked to run parcel vans on lease, Jamshed said.
Asked what kind of goods will be targeted for parcel services, the official said “basically, white goods can be transported in parcel. Pharmaceuticals, electronics and other similar items can also be transported in a big way in parcel.” The perishable commodities loaded from these destinations shall include agriculture produce, fish and eggs etc., Therefore, the VPU service will immensely serve the business interest of the poultry / farming community in the region in particular.
CTOs will be permitted to avail the facility at container rail terminals, domestic container terminals, inland container depot, multi-modal logistic park and all railway terminals.

APL Logistics brings double-stack Container Train service to India

APL Logistics brings double-stack Container Train service to India

Freight dedicated network: APL IndiaLink, the rail operations arm of APL Logistics, run its first doublestack container train service -- from Mundra port for an inland container rail terminal at Kishangarh, near Delhi
Freight dedicated network: APL IndiaLink, the rail operations arm of APL Logistics, run its first double-stack container train service – from Mundra port for an inland container rail terminal at Kishangarh, near Delhi
Chennai: APL Logistics, a unit of the Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, has extended its famous double-stack container train service — that help customers load double the volume of cargo in a single voyage — to India.
APL (American Presidential Lines) pioneered the concept in early 1984 in US domestic rail operations.
APL IndiaLinx, the rail operations arm of APL Logistics in India, recently stacked 90 forty-foot boxes two-high on a train from Mundra port for an inland container rail terminal at Kishangarh, near Delhi, according to a company official from Singapore.
The double-stacked train operation followed the Indian Railways’ recent decision to allow stacked train access along this rail corridor. This was part of the Railways’ bigger project to provide a freight-dedicated network of railroads with double-stack train access connecting key gateway ports and major North Indian industrial centres before end 2016.
APL IndiaLinx plans to expand its stacked train service network as more rail corridors are allowed double-stack access, the official said without giving a deadline. In 2006 the company was granted the rail operating licence. It owns and operates 18 weekly rail services between inland container rail terminals in northern India and the gateway ports on India’s west coast.
India Infrastructure and Logistics Private Ltd was set up in 2006 as a joint-venture between APL and Hindustan Infrastructure Projects & Engineering Private Ltd to provide rail-based container transportation and related logistics in India. Its service is marketed under the brand APL IndiaLinx.

BENEFITS

When a customer has a huge volume of freight to move between two points, using trains offer traffic and environmental benefits over trucks. With double-stack trains, these benefits are even greater.
With the container boxes stacked two-high, a double-stack train can potentially double the capacity in a train run. This effectively allows the company to move boxes out of the port area at a faster velocity in each train run, thereby easing congestion.
In fact, it also frees up the highways for trucks to move cargoes into other locations not served by rail or that do not have sufficient capacity or distance to justify rail movement. The use of double-stack trains also allow to make fewer train trips. This means reduction in fuel and emission, said the official.
In the US, double-stack trains run regularly over an intricate rail network providing time-predictable and efficient connectivity between the coastal terminals, manufacturing and consumption centres inland, the official said.
